tháng giêng: the first month on the Viet lunar calendar; on the Gregorian calendar, the first month is tháng một (“month one”) or January.
tí: little; a term of endearment for children; the sign of the Rat in the Viet zodiac (also tý)
tíu tít: eager, visibly excited
ăn tết: to celebrate a holiday (literally, to eat your way through it).
Tết Nguyên Đán is celebrated on the first day of tháng giêng, sometime between late January and early February.
